New York buzz

The vibrant feel of the Big Apple along with influences from Route 66 and rocker-chic styles dominate Robinsons’ offerings this spring.
FROM the buzz and energy of New York city to the sunny and arty living of Miami, mixed with the fabled journey of Route 66 – these are the offerings from the Robinsons stable of exclusive menswear this season.
First up this Spring/Summer 2010 is the Matinique collection which draws its inspiration from the vibrant feel of New York City, and the colour and spiritedness of Miami.
Casual chic: Embroidered top worn with three-quarter pants from the Jessica collection.
Starting with the five-pocket jeans, relaxed chinos are available in khaki as well as black, red and blue. Wear them with a washed down shirt with cool details for a day in the park, or add a classic white shirt and slim-fit blazer for a stylish night out.
Preppy sportswear is the focal point for both T-shirts and knits. And, when it comes to the night life, check out the formal wear. Sleek two-button suits are cut to create slim silhouettes.
Going the Miami way are outfits with sporty tailoring with flashes of orange, purple, turquoise and aqua blue. A crisp cotton suit in either white or electric blue looks elegant and versatile.
Wear it with a white shirt for a slender refined look, or split it up and wear the jacket with this season’s cool vintage-inspired jeans.
Alternatively, go for the two-buttoned suit in blue and white stripes. It’s perfect for hanging out in town, either worn on its own or when paired with classic chinos.
Prices range from RM199 to RM899.
Suitable man: Fitted blue suit, pink shirt and bow tie to complete the look from Matinique.
Route 66
The charm that inspired the tales of the legendary Route 66 was all about being free and easy.
Blend’s collection salutes that with all-American hand-sewn patches together with white bleached skulls and jeans, which is a strong, silent nod to the Native American. Shirts have a distressed feel and bold tin-sign logos add to the rough charm.
Check out the techno-electro details in tones of purple, acid green and blue. Add to that simple geometric shapes in shades of black and white, which give a nod to street cred.
And, if it’s the cool look you want, make a grab for the old school tattoos inked on worn shirts and fashioned in punkish, slouch shapes.
Prices range from RM79 to RM499.
The great outdoors: Crisp white fitted shirt and rolled-up jeans from Blend.
Romantic form
For the gals, check out Jessica which looks to New York for inspiration.
The natural fabrics used are interpreted through soft layering, draping and other different treatments to show off the feminine form with easy dressing being the key.
The ruffle-layered collar and sleeves details add nonchalance to the eyelet embroidery shell-coloured A-line dress.
The mustard-coloured double-layered, novelty lace cap-sleeved trapeze dress, decorated with special ethnic wooden and bronze beadings, has a strong tribal influence.
Paired with a pair of walking shorts, the cropped jacket cut from the same lace fabric is a chic choice. The sheerness of the striped lawn cotton cap-sleeve blouse with a bubble hem is another one to look out for.
The heavy ornamentation in gold and silver add instant glamour to different pieces, from the tribal warfare tops and jacket with discs and chunks, to dresses with lots of sequins and embellishments.
Graphic, floral and geometric prints are available.
Prices range from RM129 to RM859.
Stunning: Asymetric dress with separate shoulder strap embellishments from Jessica.
Rocker femme
The Colour.eighteen Spring Summer 2010 collection blends femininity with a rocker edge.
Bright colours such as red, yellow, fuchsia and orange are main accents of the season while black, white and grey serve as the basic palette.
Florals are one of the season’s hottest trends, and the collection comprises geometric, watercoloured and hand-sketched floral prints.
Nautical is in this season and is seen on tops, jackets or even dresses. These tri-coloured pieces add great vibe and freshness to the whole collection.
Part of the collection harks to the 1980s. The elaborate stud and sequin details, the removable shoulder pads and outstanding gold details, all portray a soft-rocker image with hints of female elegance.
A wide variety of one-piece outfits are available this season, and this includes distinct pieces such as a tank dress made of orange jersey and multi-coloured floral fabric.
In terms of silhouettes, a soft yellow waist-accentuaing dress with large bow details, a jade green one-shouldered dress with ruffles, and a rock-inspired tiered and studded white dress are all essentials you should not miss out on.
T-shirts that feature different multi-dimensional animal graphics such as camels, parrots, zebras and cats are staples for the casual-seeker while “jeggings” – a unique combination of leggings and jeans – will definitely become the new favourite for fashionistas.
Priced from RM99 to RM359.
